Built by French colonialists in 1930-1931, Buon Ma Thuot Prison was a place of exile and detention for patriots and communist soldiers who were arrested and heavily sentenced, mainly from the Central provinces after the peak of the Soviet Nghe Tinh movement. It is one of the notorious prisons where the French colonialists used the most brutal forms of imprisonment and torture in Indochina against communist soldiers through multiple generations.
With the resilient struggle of communist soldiers, at the end of 1940, the first Communist Party cell of the province was established at Buon Ma Thuot Prison, playing a decisive role in the success of the national liberation movement in Dak Lak, contributing to the success of the August Revolution in 1945.
